Goddess Kalaratri’s significance lies in Her fierce yet protective nature, embodying the destruction of negative forces like ignorance and fear to bring auspiciousness and spiritual enlightenment. Worshipped on the seventh day of Navratri, her form symbolises conquering darkness and offers strength, fearlessness, and protection to her devotees. She is also known as Shubhankari, the bringer of good fortune, despite her intimidating appearance, and her blessings provide prosperity and peace. She has a dark complexion and a formidable appearance, reflecting her aggressive power. She has a donkey mount symbolising humility and simplicity, showing she is approachable despite her terrifying form. She holds a sword and an iron hook in her left hands to destroy evil, while her right hands are in the Abhaya (protection) and Varada (blessing) mudras. She is worshipped for her power to destroy evil, fear, ignorance, and all forms of negativity that hinder spiritual growth. Her blessings provide protection from harm and grant devotees the courage to face life's challenges fearlessly. Despite her formidable form, she is known as Shubhankari, meaning she brings good fortune and ensures that good deeds bear fruit. Legend states that Maa Parvati assumed the form of Maa Kalaratri by shedding her golden skin to battle demons like Shumbha, Nishumbha, and Raktabeeja. She successfully destroyed Raktabeej by drinking his blood and preventing its regeneration, thus saving the world from the demon. Devotees offer jaggery to her to alleviate sorrow and bring health and prosperity.

EMBLEM OF MAHARASHTRA The emblem of the State of Maharashtra is a circular seal depicting a Samai Diva Lamp surrounded by 16 lotus blooms. Between the Samai lamp and lotus blossoms is a motto in Sanskrit 'प्रतिपच्चंद्रलेखेव वर्धिष्णुर्विश्व वंदिता महाराष्ट्रस्य राज्यस्य मुद्रा भद्राय राजते' ( Pratipaccandralēkhēva vardhiṣṇurviśva vanditā mahārāṣṭrasya rājyasya mudrā bhadrāya rājatē ), which translates as ‘The Glory of this Seal of the State Government of Maharashtra will Grow like the First day Moon. It will be worshipped by the world and will shine only for the well being of its people’. The motto is based on one found on the (rajmudra) ‘royal seal’ used by 17th century Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji, the only difference being that the name of the monarch is replaced by the name of the State.
