COLLEGE OF ARTS AND CULTURE (APACAC) |
The shield-shaped emblem of Arulmigu Palaniandavar College of Arts and Culture (APACAC) features the images of Sri Pazhani (Palani) Murugan temple on the Pazhani (Palani) Hill with the Tamil letter ‘ௐ’ (Ohm) inscribed , a peacock, a lotus and a cock. The shield is supported by a yellow banner inscribed with the motto of the college in Tamil ‘மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பது அறிவு’ (423, Thirukkural, Thiruvalluvar) meaning ‘To Discern the Truth is Wisdom’. The Pazhani (Palani) Hill symbolises divine renunciation, wisdom, and inner awakening, marking the spot where Lord Murugan renounced material life after a dispute over a ‘fruit of wisdom’. As one of the six main abodes of Murugan (Arupadaiveedu), it represents the transition from ego to self-realization, with the deity depicted as a meditating ascetic (Dandayuthapani). The letter ‘ௐ’ or Ohm is a symbol representing a sacred sound, syllable, mantra, and an invocation and the the glowing sun refers to life, energy, power, positivity, illumination, light and clarity. Lord Murugan, the Hindu deity of war, youth, and wisdom, is intricately associated with the peacock, the cock, and the lotus, which symbolise his victory over ego, vigilance, and divine purity, respectively. The relationship between Murugan and these symbols is deeply rooted in the Skanda Purana, where he transforms his defeated enemy, the demon Soorapadman, into these two avian forms, converting ego into a vehicle (peacock) and a banner (cock).
