The mortarboard hat or oxford hat symbolises educational achievement, equality, tradition and rights of passage; the shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the colour black denotes mystery, power, elegance and sophistication and the colour red denotes passion, power, strength, courage, determination, energy and celebration.

The motto is written in Sanskrit which is an extract from the Kathopanishad ‘विद्ययाऽमृतमश्नुते’, (Shloka 11, Ishopanishad) meaning ‘Immortality is Gained from Learning’. Inside the border, motifs of a drum, supported by a pair of horns; an open book topped by a red sun ; a banyan tree and a pair of crests of millets are placed. The banyan tree symbolises strength, individuality, expression, calmness, growth, the interconnectedness of everything and perpetuity; the sun denotes life, energy, power, positivity, illumination, light and clarity; the open book denotes knowledge, education, wisdom and learning and horns, drum and crests of millets denote tribal culture and food.

DIRECTORATE GENERAL FIRE SERVICES The circular emblem of Directorate General Fire Services has a red shield holding flames of fire housed in a blue circle. It is ensconced by a white border, which carries its motto in Sanskrit ‘त्राणाय सेवयामहे’ and ‘We Serve to Save’. It is surrounded by a glowing sun or fire over which the fourth or outer circle sits referring to extinguishing fire. These are placed inside four concentric circles with blue outlines.
