The dark hued circular emblem of National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) has a swan swimming in a waterbody with lotus in a night with a full moon. The swan though looks calm and gentle outwardly is agitating vigorously inside the water symbolising the human mind and body. The lotus represents the pure growing out of  impurity. This circular motif is circumscribed by a white border on which its name and its motto are inscribed. The motto reads in Sanskrit ‘समत्वं योग उच्यते’ (Shloka 48, Chapter 2, Srimad Bhagavad Gita) meaning ‘Evenness (of mind) is the Yoga’.
