The emblem of Government Degree College Budhal (GDC Budhal) features a nib of a pen supported by the text ‘Estd. 2008 and ensconced by a green circular border inscribed with the name and place of the college in English and its motto in Arabic Quranic phrase ‘مِنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ’, which translates to ‘From Darknesses Into Light’. The seal is supported by a pair of laurels on sides and its motto in Sanskrit in Sanskrit ‘तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय’ (Yajnavalkya, 1.3.28, Pavamana Mantra, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad), which translates to ‘From Darkness Lead Me to Light’ and its Urdu version ‘اندھیروں سے روشنی کی طرف’. The tagline of the college ‘From Ignorance to Wisdom’ is inscribed on a green banner placed below the seal. The fountain pen nib represents formal education, academic excellence, literacy, and the pursuit of scholarly knowledge; and the laurels signify peace, victory, honour, and academic achievement.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
