It is based in Mysore and was established in 1948 by N. Ranga Rao as Mysore Products and General Trading Company, which later became N. Ranga Rao & Sons Pvt. Ltd. Ranga Rao & Sons, started in 1948, is a manufacturer of incense and fragrances. Rao took steps in creating the Cycle brand. He opted for the word ‘Cycle Agarbatti, as the cycle was affordable. Cycle is called a cycle irrespective of any country or the language you speak. No matter how rich or poor you are, no matter which religion you follow, a cycle is a cycle. Over the years, a lot of philosophical values have been added to what the symbol of ‘cycle’ denotes in terms of prayer’.

The university's mission is to inculcate the essence of the Sanskrit Shloka ‘पदं हि सर्वत्र गुणैर्निधीयते’ meaning ‘Good Qualities Put their Footprints Everywhere’. The logo of the university has a blue and green abstract pictorial of ‘U’ and on its right a wordmark of its name in capitals thin serif letters with smooth transition of strokes. The counter of the ‘U’ is filled blue and a stroke of blue and green flows across diagonally from left to right top. This is further cut out by another ‘U’ at the top right corner. The colour blue represents serenity, calmness, trust, spirituality, calmness, wisdom, freedom, openness, intelligence and loyalty and the colour green denotes life, production, fertility, agriculture, environment and nature.
