Presidency College, Chennai uses its coat of arms as its official emblem. This features a shield inscribed with the motifs of a sun burst from waters, a red cross with a flame; and a chevron with red triangles. The shield is supported by a banner inscribed with the motto of the college in Latin ‘Unde Orta Recurrit’ meaning ‘From Where It Has Arisen, It Returns’. The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the red cross and the flame refers to  the official emblem of the United Methodist Church (UMC) and other Methodist and Holiness Pentecostal denominations; and the chevron refers to national independence, unity and specific historical dynasty. The sun burst from waters refer to rebirth, divine glory, and the interconnectedness of life, representing the active and life-giving power of the sun (or consciousness) emerging from the passive, formless potential of water (or the subconscious). Overall, the emblem is a symbol of lingering British legacy and influence on Indian educational institutions.
