ST. XAVIER'S COLLEGE

The emblem of St. Xavier's College features a shield supported by a cross supported by an ear of rice corn representing the fertile agricultural region known as ‘Maruthai’. On the right of the shield three palm leaves are placed signifying Tirunelveli District known for its palm trees and their products. On a banner placed below the shield, the motto of the college  in Latin ‘Veritate Lumen et Vita, meaning ‘Light and Life through Truth’ is inscribed. The name of the college and its place are inscribed on the circular border ensconcing the assemblage. The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
