FIRECRACKERS

The tradition of using fire and light during Diwali or Deepavali is ancient. While firecrackers are a more modern addition, the essence of using light, sound, and fire to celebrate is deeply rooted in tradition, with the word for firecrackers in Sanskrit, ‘उल्का’ (ulkā), meaning a streak of fiery light. In India, firecrackers primarily symbolise the triumph of good over evil and the victory of light over darkness, most notably during festivals like Diwali. They represent joy, celebration, and prosperity, and the loud bangs are seen as a way to welcome an auspicious time and ward off evil spirits. Historically, the use of fire and light to celebrate Diwali is an ancient tradition, with firecrackers being an extension of this, though they are a cultural and not a purely religious addition.
