UNIVERSITY OF MYSORE
UNIVERSITY OF MYSORE |
The University of Mysore was established on July 27, 1916. It is the sixth oldest in the country and the first in the state of Karnataka. It is the first university of the country to be established outside the limits of British India. The University emblem is adapted from the Royal Emblem of Mysore. It depicts the bird Gandabherunda flanked on either side by the lion-elephant Sharabha (mythical creature believed to be stronger than the lion and the elephant, and upholder of righteousness), surmounted by a lion. The motto of the University, as envisaged in its emblem is, ‘Nothing is Equal to Knowledge’ and the second line ‘I Always Uphold The Truth’ summarizes the vision, moral fabric and idealism of the Founders and of the University. The emblem is in the form of a shield which is wrapped by a banner. The banner in the shield has ‘Sathyamevodharamyaham’ in Sanskrit. The banner has ‘Na He Gyanam Shadrusham’ in Sanskrit at the top and at the bottom ‘University of Mysore’.
