The shield-shaped emblem of Goa Medical College, Goa (GMC Goa) features scenery of the coastline of Goa with sea, sun, mountains,  and coconut groves. On this background, the motifs of a Staff of Hermes is placed on an open book placed above a four pillared facade and supported by a pair of hands. Below the shield, on a blue banner the year of establishment of the college is inscribed. The shield refers to protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the Staff Caduceus the Staff of Hermes with a pair of entwined snakes and wings denotes medicine and medical profession; the book refers to knowledge, education, learning and wisdom; the facade with four pillars symbolises the bridge to heaven from earth and the pillar means strength, security of foundation and trustworthiness; and the hands refer to that of the college management.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
