The emblem of Sanjay Memorial Institute of Technology, Berhampur (SMIT) features a yellow circle with the motifs of an open book with a traditional lamp, a T-square with a setsquare, a ship and an airplane and an ear of corn with a hoe. The circle is ensconced by a circular border inscribed with the name and place of the college. Below the seal, on  a red banner, the motto of the college ‘Work is Worship’ is inscribed. The year of establishment of the college is written at the bottom. The book denotes knowledge, education, learning and wisdom; the lamp symbolises light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity; the engineering draughting tools refer to the study of engineering; the ship and the plane act as potent symbols of transition, but they represent vastly different paces, perspectives, and pathways through life; the ear of corn and the hoe symbolises agriculture and farming.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
