Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) is popularly known as Pusa Institute, began in 1905 at Pusa (Bihar) with the generous grant of GBP 30,000 from an American philanthropist, Mr. Henry Phipps. The emblem of the research institute has a leaf in red and blue with gold outlines, which is divided into three parts. The middle part has a twig of leaves, a microscope on the left and an open book on the right. It is crested by its name in Devanagari and below the leaf its English acronym and its year of establishment is written. At the bottom, on a golden banner the motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘जीव-जीवनं कृषि’ meaning ‘Agriculture is the Life of the Living’. The leaf symbolises Growth, death and rebirth; the twig symbolises nature and life; microscope symbolises scientific research; the open book symbolises knowledge and wisdom; the colour red symbolises passion, power, strength, courage, determination, energy and celebration and the colour blue symbolises  serenity, calmness, trust, spirituality, calmness, wisdom, freedom, openness, intelligence and loyalty.
