The emblem of Tranquebar Bishop Manikam Lutheran College (TBML College) features a shield housing the motifs of an open book, a helm of a ship with a cross in the centre, a hand holding a torch with flame, the New Jerusalem Church Tranquebar, Fort Dansborg of Tharangampadi and the word ‘Faith’. The initials of the management ‘TELC’ crests the shield and below the shield, on a brown banner, the motto of the college in Latin ‘Amor Vincit Omnia’ (Eclogues by Virgil) meaning ‘love conquers all’ is inscribed. The year of establishment of the college is placed at the bottom. This assemblage is placed in a rectangle. The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the book refers to education, learning and wisdom; the torch with flame is an emblem of enlightenment, hope, life, truth and the regenerative power; the helm of the ship refers to the shipping history of the place; the cross is the primary symbol of Christianity, representing the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, his victory over sin and death, and his ultimate sacrifice for humanity; the church and fort refers to the place, which was a colony under Dutch.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
