Below the seal, on a red banner, the motto of the college in Tamil ‘ ‘மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பது அறிவு’ (423, Thirukkural, Thiruvalluvar) meaning ‘To Discern the Truth is Wisdom’ is written. The gopuram of the temple symbolises to the local heritage, history and divine blessings and guidance; the book refers to education, learning and wisdom; the sun represents life, energy, power, positivity, illumination, light and clarity; and the lotus denotes purity, enlightenment, rebirth, transformation, personal growth, resilience, overcoming obstacles and divine beauty.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written.
