The shield-shaped emblem of Urumu Dhanalakshmi College (UDC) features the motifs of an open book, a ‘kuthuvilakku’ (a traditional lamp), a rocket in transit, and a lotus. The shield is crested by a star. Below the shield, on a banner, the motto of the college is inscribed in English and Tamil. The star symbolises represents perfect harmony among all things in life, with its points providing insight into how we can strive towards achieving this goal; the shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the book refers to education, learning and wisdom; the lamp symbolises light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity; the rocket symbolises science and technology; and the lotus  denotes purity, enlightenment, rebirth, transformation, personal growth, resilience, overcoming obstacles and divine beauty.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
