The emblem of Sourashtra College for Women, Madurai (SCW) features a gopuram of the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple representing the college as a ‘Tower of Knowledge’ in the temple city of Madurai. It also reflects the institution's location on Pasumalai Hill, overlooking sacred sites. A ’kuthuvilakku’ (traditional lamp) and an open are placed on the sides of the gopuram. The motifs are ensconced by a circular border inscribed with the name and place of the college and its motto in Tamil ‘கற்றனை த்தூறும் அறிவு’ (396, Thirukkural, Thiruvalluvar) meaning ‘Knowledge will Flow to the Extent of the Education Acquired by the People’. The lamp symbolises enlightenment and the dispelling of ignorance through education; and the book represents formal education, academic excellence, and the dissemination of knowledge for social development.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
