DR. SHYAMA PRASAD MUKHERJEE UNIVERSITY

The emblem of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU) is placed on a 32 petal lotus flower spread in a circle. The motifs of a triangle intersecting a circle houses an open book on which the year of its establishment is written. The national emblem Ashoka Chakra surmounts these motifs and a pair of laurels support them. All these are placed in a circle and the circle has a border with red outlines. The border carries the motto in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ and the name of the university in Devanagari. The lotus denotes purity, enlightenment, rebirth, transformation, personal growth, resilience, overcoming obstacles and divine beauty; the laurels denote ceremonies, victory, achievement, hard work and dedication; the open book represents knowledge, education, learning and wisdom; the colour red symbolises passion, power, strength, courage, determination, energy and celebration. The intersecting of circle and triangle denotes spiritual knowledge. The circle is about no beginning and no end, eternal, cycles, never-ending and the triangle is masculine which represents the body.
