The emblem of Binod Bihari Mahto Koyalanchal University (BBMKU) has a 34 pointed golden star on which the emblem is designed with three layers. The first and the inner layer houses the motifs a pedestal with a gear wheel denoting industry, industrialisation and production; a diamond representing the coal fields of Dhanbad; a microscope representing science and scientific exploration; a scroll of degree held by a hand representing the result of scholarship, hard work and achievement; a group of indica plants denoting the indigo dye obtained from them and a an open book symbolising learning, knowledge, education and wisdom The second layer is the circular border around the motifs, which bears the names of the university and its place separated by a pair of laurels which denote ceremonies, victory, achievement, hard work and dedication. The third layer is a circular border inscribed with its name and place in Devanagari separated by five stars on each side. At the bottom on a banner the motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय’ (Yajnavalkya,1.3.28, Pavamana Mantra, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad) meaning ‘From Darkness Lead Me to Light’. The gold colour denotes wealth, prosperity, power, prestige and achievement and the star denotes represents perfect harmony among all things in life, with its points providing insight into how we can strive towards achieving this goal.
