Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was established in 1966 under the JNU Act, 1966 (53 of 1966). The university’s emblem is inspired by the rose bud, which is associated with Nehru and created using its acronym. The overlapping of circular strokes depicts a traditional Indian lamp and interaction with global knowledge. Lamp and globe symbolises universality, enlightenment, growth and human interaction. Its acronym in Devanagari and English are placed below the flame.
