The motto of the college in Sanskrit ‘तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय’ (Yajnavalkya, 1.3.28, Pavamana Mantra, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad) meaning ‘From Darkness Lead Me to Light’ is written on both sides of the image. The name and place of the college are written around the image. Gautama Buddha represents peace, wisdom, mindfulness and the rich historical heritage of Gaya (Bodh Gaya), where he achieved enlightenment. The abhaya mudra symbolises overcoming the fear of the unknown, imparting confidence, and offering protection and reassurance to students on their learning journey. The lotus represents purity, resilience and spiritual detachment. The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written.
