Below the shield, on a red banner, the motto of the college in Latin ‘Cor Unum Anima Una’ (4:32, Acts of the Apostles), translates to ‘One Heart, One Mind’ is written, The sacred heart symbolises the Sacred Heart of Jesus, representing Christ's love radiating for all mankind; the red roses represent the three major humanitarian works of the SCJM congregation: ‘Teaching, Nursing, and Social Work’; the fleur-de-lis and twelve stars Mother Mary; the red background symbolises love and courage, while the gold elements denote faith and wisdom; and the central gold band is also described as a golden pathway, symbolising a life of love, compassion and selfless service toward the poor.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written.
