The emblem of Kannada University (KU) is based on the head part of the Halmidi inscription from the year 540 AD  is meaningful and therefore is adopted by the university as its motif. The motto of the university in Kannada ‘ಮಾತೆಂಬುದು ಜ್ಯೋತಿರ್ಲಿಂಗ’ (Vachana, Allamaprabhu) meaning ‘The Word is Jyotirlinga’ is inscribed on a banner at the bottom of the seal, which is inspired from the Harappan culture.
