The brown colour shield is the insignia of the National law School of India University (NLSIU) has a two-pan beam balance representing justice as wielded by statues of Lady Justice and the supporting hands signify the support for justice, healing and life; an open book denoting education, learning, knowledge and wisdom and a map of the Republic of India denoting the university’s service to the nation. The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery and the colour brown symbolises earthiness, simplicity, stability, humility, warmth, reliability, endurance, timelessness and tradition. Below the shield, its motto in Sanskrit meaning ‘धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः’ (Verse 8.15, Manusmriti, Mahabharata) meaning ‘Those Who Protect the Dharma are Protected by Dharma’ is inscribed.

UNIVERSITY OF JAMMU The University of Jammu (UoJ) came into existence in 1969 through the Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act 1969 following bifurcation of the erstwhile University of Jammu and Kashmir. The circular emblem of the university has an open book supporting a lotus with a background of mountains and surmounted by atomic structure. These are ensconced by a yellow circular border which carries its motto in Sanskrit ‘तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय’ (Yajnavalkya,1.3.28, Pavamana Mantra, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad) meaning ‘From Darkness Lead me to Light’ on one side and its name in Kashmiri on the other side.
