The insignia of University of Mumbai (UoM) is a shield housing the motifs of its iconic tower, a pair of gear wheels and a factory building, a ship to represent the city of Mumbai’s port and an open book with ‘1857’, the year of its establishment written. Below the shield, on a brown banner, its motto in Sanskrit ‘शीलवृत्त फला विद्या’ meaning ‘Virtue is the Fruit of Knowledge’. The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; The factory and gear wheels denote the industrialisation of its geography and the open book denotes knowledge, education, learning and wisdom.

At the bottom, a banner inscribed with the motto of the college in Tamil ‘‘கற்றனைத் தூறும் அறிவு’ (Thiruvalluvar, 396, Thirukkural) meaning ‘Knowledge Grows As Much As One Learns’ is inscribed is placed on the seal. Athiyaman and Avvaiyar refer to history and heritage; the book, sun and the humans refer to education and educational achievement; the tree refers to nature, sustenance and growth; the computer refers to technology; and the dam refers to the local landmark.
