MANGALORE UNIVERSITY

The emblem of Mangalore University (MU) depicts its geography, history and tradition through a number of motifs. In the centre of a circle the motifs of rising sun above mountains and waterbody and trees are  placed representing the geography of the locale. It is ensconced by a yellow circular border on which its name is inscribed in Kannada and English. The circular seal is crested by a colourful headgear or ‘kirita’ of the famous folk dance form ‘Yakshagana’ and supported on either side by coffee plant branches with leaves and fruits for which the city and the State of Karnataka are famous for. At the bottom of the insignia, on a blue banner the motto of the university in Kannada ‘ಜ್ಞಾನವೇ-ಬೆಳಕು’ meaning ‘Knowledge is Light’ is inscribed.

Inside the gear lies a dynamic combination of industrial equipment and technical structures, signifying active research, production, and technological innovation. SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
