MAHARAJA SURAJMAL BRIJ UNIVERSITY

The emblem of Maharaja Surajmal Brij University (MSBU) has a traditional lamp supported by an open book with its year of inception placed on it and its motto in Sanskrit ‘नास्ति विद्या समं चक्षु’ (Verse 12.169.33, Mahabharata) meaning ‘Knowledge is the Greatest Eye’ on a blue banner, below the book and a pair of laurels on sides. These are ensconced in a red colour circular border, whose outer edge is depicted as a multi-pointed glow as a sun, which carries its name in Devanagari and English. The traditional lamp symbolises light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity; the open book symbolises education, knowledge, learning and wisdom; the laurels symbolise ceremonies, victory, achievement, hard work and dedication and the sun denotes life, energy, power, positivity, illumination, light and clarity.

PARAVANI The Paravani, Mayil, Mayura or the peacock is the vahana or vehicle of the Lord Karthikeya, Murugan, Subrahmanya, Skanda, Kumara, Saravana, Arumukha, Devasenapati, Shanmukha, Kathirvela, Guha or Swaminatha. The legend has it that the demon king Surapadman, with the boon he received from the gods had become invincible. He believed that he was immortal and began tormenting all across the universe. Lord Kartikeya confronted the Surapadman and he evaded the Lord’s attacks. The demon transformed himself into a large tree near Tiruchendur. Lord Kartikeya using his Vel, the divine spear struck the tree and split Surapadman into two halves. The demon sought forgiveness from the Lord and transformed the halves into Mayil or peacock and a rooster.
