It was established in 1960 and has been one of the eighteen Regional Engineering Colleges sponsored by the Government of India during the Second Plan. Its emblem is an Arabic calligraphic monogram of 'الظلمات إلى النور', which is placed in the middle. A set of three chinar leaves float on both the sides of the monogram. At the bottom of the monogram its motto in Sanskrit ‘तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय‘ meaning ‘Lead me from Darkness to Light’ is placed. Below this on two banners the name of the institute and the place are written.
