The National Institute of Technology Meghalaya (NITM) is one among the thirty-one NITs in India established under the NIT Act 2007 (Amended 2012) of the Parliament of India as Institutes of National Importance. Its logo consists of a gear wheel, abstract of an atom with the orbit of an electron and an earthen lamp at the centre. Red earthen lamp is a symbol of light in yellow colour. Light symbolises knowledge and darkness represents ignorance. The Lord is the ‘Knowledge Principle’ (Chaitanya) who is the source, the enlivener and the illuminator of all knowledge. Wheel is derived out of a circle. Meaning of the symbol circle is universal, sacred and divine. It represents the infinite nature of energy, and the inclusivity of the universe. Thus the gear wheel represents forces that provide energy, movement or direction. Atoms symbolised Science and energy. It is the basis of all materials and also the future of humankind and source of energy. The institution’s name in English and Devanagari encircles the composition in the logo. In totality, this logo represents a national level technological institution that dedicates to creation of knowledge through science and technology (atom) to remove ignorance (Light) and bring development. It will contribute through research in energy and will bring positive changes to the society (Wheel and circle) through knowledge (light).
