The blue circular seal of Raja Doraisingam Government Arts College (RDGAC) features the gopuram of the Sri Sasivarneswarar Temple, a pair of crossed flagpoles with flags of Lord Garuda and Lord Hanuman, a traditional lamp supported by an open book and a banner inscribed with the motto of the college in Tamil ‘அறிவே தெய்வம்’ meaning ‘Knowledge is God’. The motifs are ensconced by a circular border inscribed with the name of the college and its place in Tamil. The gopuram refers to the heritage and history and divine blessings and grace; the flags with the motifs of Lord Garuda and Lord Hanuman refers to the Queen Velu Nachiyar’s (18th century) flags symbolising traditions of strength, devotion, and victory; the lamp symbolises light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity; the book refers to education, knowledge, learning and wisdom.

The name of the college is written on the right in extra bold black capitals. NATIONAL LAW INSTITUTE UNIVERSITY The National Law Institute University (NLIU) has been established by Act No. 41 of 1997 of the Madhya Pradesh Legislature to fill the gap and provide the most modern legal education through multidisciplinary teaching and training of newer skills needed for the profession. The University launched its first academic programme in 1998. The red circular emblem of the university has its acronym written in the middle, topped by a yellowish drop of enlightenment, knowledge, wisdom and realisation. Below this its motto in Sanskrit ‘यत्नवान सुखमेधते’ meaning ‘The Diligent Grows Happily’ is inscribed. These are ensconced in a circular border which carries the name of the university, its place and its year of establishment.

The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the lamp symbolises light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity; the book refers to education, knowledge, learning and wisdom; the ship refers to the Cuddalore Port; the gopuram signifies divine blessings and guidance; and the elephants signify power, strength, unity and wisdom.

NATIONAL ATLAS AND THEMATIC MAPPING ORGANISATION The red colour emblem of National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation (NATMO) has an open book written on it with a monogram of ‘na’ in white supported by its motto in Sanskrit. Its name is written in Devanagari and ENglish around the pictorial. The Lion Capital crests the assembly. The open book refers to knowledge, education, learning and wisdom.

PALM The palm is a symbol of Jain religion. The lower portion of this palm shows fearlessness and symbolize the feeling of non-violence ‘Ahimsa’ towards all the creatures in this world. The circle in the middle of the hand symbolizes the cycle of reincarnation ‘Samsara’ and the 24 spokes represent the preachings of the 24 Tirthankars – ‘enlightened souls’, which can be used to liberate a soul from the cycle or reincarnation. The mantra of ‘Ahimsa’ at the bottom of emblem means ‘Live and Let Live’ - ‘Parsparograho Jivanam’. All creatures should help one another. The wheel of dharma with 24 spokes represents the religion preached by the 24 Jain Tirthankars which consist of nonviolence - ‘Ahimsä’, compassion, Aparigraha, Anekäntvaad and other virtues and equality of all the souls.

MANKOLAM Mankolam, the abstract image of mango and the paisley design is shaped like a mango and associated with Lord Ganesha. Mangos are the sweetest of fruits, symbolizing auspiciousness and the happy fulfillment of legitimate worldly desires. In Sanskrit the design is known as mankolam and has long been used in India. In Tamil, ‘ma’ means Mango and kolam means rangoli pattern, suggesting a possible Tamil origin for the Sanskrit word.
