ANGAPPA COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE (ACAS)

The emblem of Angappa College of Arts and Science (ACAS) features a yellow and red colour shield with a blue and yellow outlines housing the motifs of a mortarboard hat, an open book, a ‘kuthuvilakku’ (a traditional lamp) and a pair of laurels and inscribed with the initials and name of the college and its motto ‘Knowledge Through Education’. The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the mortarboard hat or Oxford hat denotes educational achievement, equality, tradition and rights of passage; the book denotes knowledge, education, learning and wisdom; the lamp refers to light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity; and the laurels are are symbols of ceremonies, victory, achievement, hard work and dedication.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
