The circular emblem of Vellalar College For Women (VCW) features the images of a temple with gopuram on a hillock above a waterbody, a ‘Pavaivilakku’ a statue of a lady with a lamp, a lotus supporting palm leaf manuscripts, a pair of ears of paddy and a pair of sugarcanes. The motto of the college in Tamil ‘உள்ளுவதெல்லாம் உயர்வுள்ளல்’ (Thiruvalluvar, 596, Thirukkural) meaning ‘Let Our Thoughts be Noble Ones’ surmounts the pictorial emblem. The lotus is the National Flower, which symbolises the blooming of young minds in the light of knowledge; the palm leaf manuscripts stands as the basic of our ancient educational traditions; the ‘Pavaivilakku’ brings out the importance of women’s education as the light of knowledge, emanating from educated women dispels the darkness of ignorance and guides us along the path of knowledge; and the temple on the hill focuses attention on the fact that it is only the Creator who can guide man in his pursuit of true knowledge and peace and lead him to the pinnacle of glory.
