The shield is supported by a red banner inscribed with the college’s motto in Tamil ‘நன்றின்பால் உய்ப்பது அறிவு’ (442, Thirukkural, Thiruvalluvar) meaning ‘Knowledge…, but Keeping it Away from Evil and Directing it Only Towards Good’ supported by a pair of elephants. These motifs are ensconced by a green circular border inscribed with the name and place of the college in Tamil. The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the gopuram Sri Arthanareeswarar Temple refers to history, heritage and divine blessings and guidance; the ‘₹’ symbol refers to finance and economics; the mortarboard hat hat or Oxford hat denotes educational achievement, equality, tradition and rights of passage; the stars represent perfect harmony among all things in life, with its points providing insight into how we can strive towards achieving this goal; the book and the quill refers to learning, education, knowledge and wisdom; the elephants signify power, strength, unity and wisdom.

INDIAN GRAPE PROCESSING BOARD Keeping the above in mind and to co-ordinate the efforts for promotion and development of the wine industry in India in close association with industry, producers and other stakeholders, the Union Cabinet in its meeting held on January 2, 2009 gave its approval for the establishment of the Indian Grape Processing Board (IGPB) under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The Board has its headquarters in Pune, Maharashtra that is close to the principal grape growing and processing areas in the country. SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
