The emblem of Government Arts College, Kumbakonam (GACK) features a shield housing the motifs of a book stand with a traditional lamp, a hand holding a ‘Karalakattai’and the college buildings with trees and the flowing River Cauvery; and crested with the Dharmachakra, the wheel and a pair of elephants supporting it. The elephants represent the strong bond of love and balanced union between students, embodying the pride of the college; the Dharmachakra refers to the nationalistic orientation of the college; the lamp reflects the light of education that the college has been imparting for generations; the book refers to knowledge, education, learning and wisdom; the hand with ‘karalaakattai’ emphasises the belief that only a healthy body can possess a fertile heart, highlighting the importance of physical well-being and play; the river represents the uninterrupted flow of knowledge, fertilizing the students' minds; and the shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery. Below the shield, on a banner, the motto of the college ‘மெய்ப்பொருள் கல்வி’(22, Kontrai Vendan, Auvaiyar) meaning ‘The Realisation of the Eternal God’ is inscribed. The great mathematician Srinivasan Ramanujan is one of its famous alumni.
