The emblem of Queen Mary’s College (QMC) features a shield housing the motifs of a gopuram, a dancing peacock, an elephant holding a lotus in its trunk, an open book and a throne. The shield is supported by a golden banner inscribed with the motto of the college ‘Commonsense & Consideration’. The shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the gopuram or temple tower refers to the State of Tamilnadu and its heritage; the peacock and the elephant denote grace, intelligence and dedication; the book symbolises education, knowledge, and learning, representing the core mission of the college to empower women through education; the throne represents authority, leadership, and the seat of learning.

The central motifs of the winged Staff of Caduceus entwined by a pair of serpents crested with a flaming torch, supported by an open book and a pair of laurels replace the Lion Capital; and the name, place and motto of the college replace the name of the State. The motto of the college in Sanskrit is ‘विद्यया विन्दते अमृतम्’ (Mantra 2.4, Kenopanishad), which translates to ‘Immortality Through Knowledge’. The Staff of Caduceus symbolises medicine and medical profession; the book symbolises the accumulation and dissemination of medical knowledge and the academic foundation of the institution; the torch with flame is an emblem of enlightenment, hope, life, truth and the regenerative power; and the laurels are symbols, which represent victory, honour and academic excellence.
