CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF ODISHA

The Central University of Odisha (CUO) has been established by the Parliament under the Central Universities Act, 2009 (No. 3C of 2009). The logo of CUO has the wheel of Konark Sun temple supported by an open book and a traditional lamp on a black shield with thick brown border. These colours represent the geography. These are circumscribed by its name and the place ‘Koraput’ it is located. The wheel represents the time and the continuous evolution of the world and life. The lamp shows light and the path to discover and the open book is the source of knowledge and wisdom.

The name and place of the college is written around the circle. A purple laurel supports the seal. The mountains and river refer to the local topography of snow-capped peaks of the Himalayan mountain ranges; the lightning bolt symbiosis raw energy, power, enlightenment, and the sparking of knowledge; and the laurels represent a traditional laurel wreath, which symbolises academic triumph, victory and the pursuit of honour.

GOVERNMENT DEGREE COLLEGE, HIRANAGAR (GDC HIRANAGAR) The emblem of Government Degree College, Hiranagar (GDC Hiranagar) features an entrance arch with a traditional lamp supported by an open book with the motto of the college in Sanskrit ‘सा विद्या या विमुक्तये’ Rishi Parāśara, 1,19.41, Viṣṇu Purāṇa), which translates to  ‘Knowledge is the One That Liberates’ is written at the bottom. An image of Goddess Saraswati is placed on the right and an image of a palm tree placed on the right. All these are ensconced by red circular outlines and surmounted by the name of the college. SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.

The mountain range and the river refer to the geography of the college; the shield denotes protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery; the book denotes knowledge, education, learning and wisdom; the sun represents life, energy, power, positivity, illumination, light and clarity;  the flaming torch is an emblem of enlightenment, hope, life, truth and the regenerative power; and the laurels are symbols of ceremonies, victory, achievement, hard work and dedication.
