OSMANIA UNIVERSITY

The seal of the Osmania University (OS) is the adaptation of its earlier versions. It has the letter ‘ع’ (Ain) the starting letter of its name in Urdu, ensconced by a banner which has formed itself into a shape of shield with festoons. The top portion of banner has its motto in Sanskrit ‘तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय’ (Yajnavalkya,1.3.28, Pavamana Mantra, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad) meaning ‘From Darkness Lead me to Light’ is written; the sides of the shield are written with its name in English and on the hangings its name is written in Telugu. The shield symbolises protection, courage, heritage, authority and bravery.

Below the seal, on a blue banner, the year of establishment of the college is written. The scales are the scales of justice representing fairness, balance and impartiality in the legal process; the laurels are a traditional symbol of victory, honour and academic achievement; the stars or hexagrams symbolise excellence, professionalism and guidance; the colour red symbolises energy, strength and authority; the green represents growth, stability and prosperity; and blue represents trust, intelligence and loyalty.

RAJENDRA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES (RIMS) The emblem of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) is directly adapted from the State Emblem of the State of Jharkhand. The central motifs of the winged Staff of Caduceus entwined by a pair of serpents crested with a flaming torch, supported by an open book and a pair of laurels replace the Lion Capital; and the name, place and motto of the college replace the name of the State. The motto of the college in Sanskrit is ‘विद्यया विन्दते अमृतम्’ (Mantra 2.4, Kenopanishad), which translates to ‘Immortality Through Knowledge’. The Staff of Caduceus symbolises medicine and medical profession; the book symbolises the accumulation and dissemination of medical knowledge and the academic foundation of the institution; the torch with flame is an emblem of enlightenment, hope, life, truth and the regenerative power; and the laurels are symbols, which represent victory, honour and academic excellence.

Below the rectangle, its acronym is written in blue sans serif typeface and its name is written at the bottom. The ‘E’ in the acronym is written with a red and two horizontal bars denoting equality, synonymous and navigation; the sun symbolises life, energy, power, positivity, illumination, light and clarity; water signifies life, motion and fertility; horse symbolises strength, courage and freedom; the colour red denotes passion, power, strength, courage, determination, energy and celebration and the colour blue denotes serenity, calmness, trust, spirituality, calmness, wisdom, freedom, openness, intelligence and loyalty.
