The Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management was established in 1980 by a group of persons led by Dr. M. V. V. S. Murthi, former Member of Parliament and philanthropist with a goal, to bring to life Mahatma Gandhi's vision of an institution for higher education. The three cardinal principles of GITAM – strive, serve, thrive - encapsulate the quintessence of human life. The light of knowledge is pure and can kindle million more lights, thus spreading the effulgence beyond horizons, dispelling the darkness of ignorance in the entire globe. The unfathomable sea stands for the ocean of knowledge. The ocean represents the vast region of knowledge across which GITAM strives to help all those who wish to master. The dolphins reflect friendliness, intelligence and unity .

MAHATMA GANDHI UNIVERSITY KOTTAYAM The brown colour circular insignia of the Mahatma Gandhi University Kottayam (MGUK) in  Kerala has a traditional spinning wheel of the charkha representing Mahatma Gandhi’s values in a circle. These are ensconced by a circular border, which carries its name and place. At the bottom on a bunch of palm leaf manuscripts its motto in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया अमृतमश्नुते’ (Verse 11, Ishopanishad) meaning ‘Knowledge Enjoys Immortality’ is inscribed. The charkha or spinning wheel, is a symbol of self-sufficiency, freedom and resilience. The charkha was popularised by Mahatma Gandhi, who used it as a metaphor for ancient work ethics and a symbol of economic and social reaction to British rule. The portal hosts applications for approvals from twenty eight Central Departments and twenty State Governments. These approvals can be applied through NSWS.
