GOVERNMENT KILPAUK MEDICAL COLLEGE (KMC)

The emblem of Government Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) features a Staff of Hermes or Staff of Caduceus entwined by a pair of serpents and crested by a traditional lamp supported by a banner inscribed with the motto of the college in Latin ‘Mens Sana In Corpore Sano’ meaning 'A Sound Mind In a Sound Body’. The staff with the snake has long been a symbol of medicine and the medical profession. It originates from the story of Asclepius, who was revered by the ancient Greeks as a god of healing and whose cult involved the use of snakes. The lamp symbolises light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity.
