The Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) was established by an Act passed by the parliament (No. 58 of 1994). The university came into existence on January 10, 1996. The blue emblem of the university has a shield which has a peepal tree surrounded by a fence symbolising enlightenment, supported by prayer beads and Buddhist pillars on either side. The name of the university is written atop the shield in four lines. Below the shield, its place is written; its motto ‘प्रज्ञा शील करुणा’ meaning ‘Wisdom Modesty Compassion’ and the year of establishment are written.
