Chhatrapati Shahujii Maharaj University Kanpur (CSJMU) is a premier institution of higher education in Uttar Pradesh. It was formerly known as Kanpur University. The university was established in 1966 under the Kanpur and Meerut Universities Act 1965. The emblem of the university has a rising sun symbolising the spreading of knowledge supported by a lotus denoting revolution in different spheres of knowledge, floating on water symbolising the depth of knowledge and  its motto in Sanskrit ‘आरोह तमसो ज्योतिः’ (8.1.8, Atharva Ved) meaning ‘Rise from Darkness to Light’ ensconced in a circular border bearing its name written in Devanagari and English.
