The emblem of K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College (KAPVMC) features a Staff of Hermes or Staff of Caduceus with a pair of wings and entwined by a pair of serpents supported ensconced by a pair of green laurels. The motifs are surmounted by a banner inscribed with the name and place of the college and supported by another banner inscribed with the motto of the college ‘Care Serve Cure’. The Staff is crested by an image of the Rockfort, which is a landmark of Tiruchirapally. The staff with the snake has long been a symbol of medicine and the medical profession. It originates from the story of Asclepius, who was revered by the ancient Greeks as a god of healing and whose cult involved the use of snakes. The colour green indicates agriculture, nature, growth, balance, harmony, environment, prosperity, vitality, prestige, wealth and being very down to earth.

The central motifs of the winged Staff of Caduceus entwined by a pair of serpents crested with a flaming torch, supported by an open book and a pair of laurels replace the Lion Capital; and the name, place and motto of the college replace the name of the State. The motto of the college in Sanskrit is ‘विद्यया विन्दते अमृतम्’ (Mantra 2.4, Kenopanishad), which translates to ‘Immortality Through Knowledge’. The Staff of Caduceus symbolises medicine and medical profession; the book symbolises the accumulation and dissemination of medical knowledge and the academic foundation of the institution; the torch with flame is an emblem of enlightenment, hope, life, truth and the regenerative power; and the laurels are symbols, which represent victory, honour and academic excellence.

MAULANA AZAD NATIONAL URDU UNIVERSITY Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) is a Central University established by an Act of Parliament in 1998. The logo of the university has two strokes of orange and green forming the shape of ‘U’ in tricolour and has a ‘Ashoka Chakra’ at its top. This is supported by an open book on which images of an atom and a burning candle are depicted. Its name is written in Urdu atop the emblem on a banner; written in Devanagari on a banner above the logo and in English at its bottom. THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT The first Indian airborne formation was the 50 Independent Parachute Brigade raised on October 29, 1941 with 151 British, 152 Indian and 153 Gurkha Parachute Battalions and other support units. The Indian Parachute Regiment was established on March 1, 1945, as the regiment to which is Indian and Gurkha parachute battalions would belong. 152nd Indian Parachute Bn was split to form the 1st Parachute Bn consisting of Hindu troops and the Muslims troops forming the 4th Para Bn, while 153rd and 154th Gurkha Para Bns being renamed the 2nd and 3rd Battalions respectively. Four independent parachute companies were also raised to complete the regiment, one each as a defence company for the divisional HQ and the brigade HQs and named thus. Its Regimental Centre is Bangalore with the training establishment at Agra. Regimental insignia is an open parachute with wings spread out and a dagger placed upright, between the wingsand its motto is ‘Shatrujeet’ (The Conqueror).
