GOVERNMENT ARTS AND SCIENCE COLLEGE, THIRUVADANAI (GACTVD)

The emblem of Government Arts and Science College, Thiruvadanai (GACTVD) features a motif of an open book supporting a traditional lamp ensconced by a circular border inscribed with the name of the college in Tamil and supported by the head of a ram. The seal is supported on sides by a pair of elephants and a banner placed below the motto of the college in Tamil ‘உள்ளத்தனையது உயர்வு’ (595, Thirukkural, Thiruvalluvar)  meaning ‘The Height of One's Achievement Depends On the Strength of One's Will’. The lamp symbolises ; the book refers to knowledge, education, learning and wisdom; and the elephants signify power, strength, unity and wisdom. Thiruvadanai is well known for the ancient Sri Rathneswarar Temple. The name originates from the legend of Vaaruni, who was cursed by Sage Dhurvasa and worshipped Shiva here to regain his normal form. The main deity is Lord Adhi Ratneswarar, with consorts Snehavalli; the temple also houses Vaaruni in a unique elephant-body, goat-head form in Aja-Gaja Swaroopam. The elephants and the ram refer to this Aja-Gaja Swaroopam.
