The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), as it is known today, came into being as the Institute of Armament Studies in 1952 in the CME campus. In 1967, the Institute was renamed as Institute of Armament Technology (IAT), which moved to its present location at Girinagar, Pune. In the year 2000, the Institute acquired the status of a Deemed to be University. The emblem of the university has a wheel with twelve spokes surrounded by a six-pointed star supported by a traditional lamp with a backdrop of the colours of the triservices are ensconced by a grey circular border which bears its name. It has a decorative lotus border and is crested by the Ashoka Lion, which is the national emblem of India. This motif is supported by a pair of golden laurels on sides and at the bottom with a banner. The banner is inscribed with its motto in Sanskrit ‘शास्त्रेण शस्त्रं प्रकरोति रक्षाम्’ which means ‘By the Scriptures, the Weapon is the Type of Protection’. The traditional lamp symbolises light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity; the wheel stands for moving in general and the continuity of changes; a six-pointed star represents perfect harmony among all things in life, with its points providing insight into how we can strive towards achieving this goal and the laurels signify victory and achievement. They are often used in awards ceremonies and they are also a popular choice for graduation and are a reminder of the hard work and dedication that it takes to achieve success.
