SRIMANTA SANKARADEVA UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH SCIENCES

Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, Guwahati, Assam, India was established in 2009. The emblem of the university has a caduceus or the staff of Hermes, depicted as a stick with a pair of wings, entwined by two snakes; the map of the State of Assam and an open book placed in a brown toned circle. This is ensconced by a white border with black and brown outlines. It carries the name of the university and is supported by a pair of traditional lamps. The year of establishment of the university is also placed on the border. On a banner at the bottom of the emblem ‘Guwahati, Assam’ is written. The emblem is supported by a pair of laurels. The staff of Hermes denotes the medical profession; the open book signifies knowledge and wisdom; traditional lamps signify light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity and laurels signify victory, accomplishment, honour, recognition, immortality, peace and harmony.

SAMBALPUR UNIVERSITY The Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Odisha Legislature on December 10, 1966 and the University started functioning from January 1, 1967. The university was inaugurated on January 4, 1967. In 1973 the University was shifted to the present campus named Jyoti Vihar at Burla. The emblem of the university has the motifs of gear wheels, chimney and electric transmission tower representing industry; plough representing agriculture; deer representing the local wildlife; an open book denoting knowledge and wisdom; a torch symbolising light, truth and power; the Wheel of Konark symbolising Odisha’s culture and history and river symbolising Mahanadi. All these are ensconced by a circular border and along the border the name of the university is written. The motto of the university in Sanskrit ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम्’ (Verse 4 II, Kena Upanishad) meaning ‘By Self-knowledge Immortality is Attained’ is written at the bottom of the emblem.
