Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST) came into existence on September 20, 1999 following the amendment in Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Act 1982. The emblem of the university has a tree, heads of wheat plant with awns, three leaves, cattle ploughing the field with a background of a mountain and river with rising sun in yellow colour ensconced by a part of a gear wheel. The gear wheel bears the motto of the university from Rig Veda (34-13) in Sanskrit ‘कृषिमित् कृषस्व वित्ते रमस्व’ and Kashmiri meaning ‘Work like a Farmer and Benefit from Earnings’. The name of the university is written around the emblem. The motifs in front of the mountain and the mountain represent the geography of the locale and the domain of engagement of the university. The rising sun symbolises light, universal prosperity and path for growth; gear wheel represents interconnectedness; efficiency and precision; progress and advancement; synchronisation and timing and order and structure; the colour blue signifies serenity, calmness, trust, spirituality, calmness, wisdom, freedom, openness, intelligence and loyalty and the colour green indicates agriculture, nature, growth, balance, harmony, environment, prosperity, vitality, prestige, wealth and being very down to earth.
