The proposal of Don Bosco Society, submitted to the Government of Assam on November 8, 2007. On March 29, 2008, the government issued the Letter of Intent (LOI) to the Salesians of Don Bosco for establishing Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU). It was followed by an Ordinance of the State government on December 3, 2008. The first batch of students graduated on September 19, 2012. The blue and green emblem of the university has 'The Cross' which signifies its underlying Christian inspiration; the profile of St. John Bosco who is the founder of the Don Bosco Society; an open book emphasises its commitment to academic excellence; the rays of the rising sun stand for its dynamism and commitment to society and its motto, 'Carpe Diem' meaning 'Seize the Day' challenging every stakeholder of the university to grasp the opportunities presented by each new day and attain Life in its Fullness’. The blue five pointed star or pentagram (geometrically an equilateral concave decagon), is a common ideogram in modern culture as a symbol of fame or stardom.
