COTTON UNIVERSITY |
Cotton University (CU) was formerly known as Cotton College, the institute was established in 1901 by Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the Chief Commissioner of the erstwhile British province of Assam. It became a constituent college of Gauhati University in 1948. In 2011 the Cotton College State University was established vide an Act of the Government of Assam, with the college as a constituent. Cotton University came into being in 2017 through The Cotton University Act, 2017 that enabled the unification of Cotton College State University and Cotton College. The official emblem of the university dates back to 1933. It was designed by Mohendra Nath Deka Phukan, an alumni of the university. This emblem is a shield which is a symbol of protection of Assam. The shield is coloured orange and green, with orange signifying the sense of sacrifice, and green symbolising peace. The oval-shaped arc with eight corners is a reminder of the glory of Ahom kingdom. The blue colour is used to mean the clear and vast sky that teaches us to widen our hearts. The hills denote the Asomiyas belonging to the plains and hills of Assam. The rising sun behind the hills symbolises hope and light. It is the dispeller of darkness. The lamp burning in the middle is the light of knowledge. The ‘Sarai’ placed below the lamp depicts the glory of ancient Assam. The stars indicate the path of progress beyond limitation. At the bottom on a black banner, its motto in Sanskrit ‘अप्रमत्तेन वेद्धव्यम्’ (Shloka 59, Khanda 2, Mundaka 2, Chapter 6, Mundakopanishad) meaning ‘With Full Attentiveness It is to be Known’ is written.
