Dr. Y.S.R Horticultural University was established by the Government of Andhra Pradesh through G.O. Ms. No.134 dated June 26, 2007 at Venkataramannagudem, near Tadepalligudem in West Godavari District. Andhra Pradesh is the leader in the production of mango, oil palm, chillies, turmeric, sweet orange, papaya and second largest producer of total fruits and spices. The university started functioning from June 26, 2007 at Venkataramannagudem. The green colour circular emblem of the university has a border which bears the name of the university in Telugu and English separated by two flowers. Inside the circle which is divided into three parts, it houses mango, guava, tomato and cashew fruits in one part and on the second part it has laboratory flask, DNA structure and on the third portion a microscope is placed. All these are supported by an open book and a traditional lamp and a pair of laurels of flowers. The open book symbolises education, knowledge and wisdom and the traditional lamp signifies light, illumination, awakening, devotion, purity, guidance, protection, hope and prosperity.
