BIDHAN CHANDRA KRISHI VISWAVIDYALAYA

The Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) with the headquarters at Mohanpur, Nadia was established in 1974. In the year 1980, the North Bengal campus of BCKV was established at Pundibari, Cooch Behar. It was bifurcated later to establish the West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences thereby separating out the faculty of Veterinary Sciences in 1995. It was further split into two agricultural universities with the establishment of Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV) in 2001. The emblem of the university is in the form of a traditional arch found in the local architecture with two outlines. It houses the motifs of sun, trees, kumbha and pairs of fish depicted in the traditional terracotta style and Harappan bull. Below these its motto in Sanskrit ‘ज्ञानेन त्राृदूध्याताम सीता’ meaning ‘Let us Save Sita (the Daughter of Earth) by Knowledge’ is written. The name of the university is written at the bottom. The sun symbolises life, energy, power, positivity, illumination, light and clarity; Kumbha life and the generative power of human beings; and the other images denote the educational domain of the university.
